- Step 1: Insert a blank CD (for storage of the dataset) and enter the chemical formula using the periodic table on the touchscreen. The SMART X2S automatically loads and aligns the sample.
The SMART X2S features a user-friendly interface. Its software combines an expert knowledge of structural chemistry with the power of industry-standard SHELXTL data processing engines for structure solution and refinement. The SMART X2S software automatically determines the structure of most routine samples. In fact, when applied to an extensive library of over 2,000 real-world samples compiled at the University of Durham, the SMART X2S automatically determined the correct structure in over 90% of the cases.
- Step 2: SMART X2S software automatically acquires a complete dataset, determines the unit cell, the Bravais lattice, the space group, and finally solves and refines the structure.
In those challenging cases where crystallographic structures are not solved automatically (such as twinned crystals or disordered structures), the datasets may be manually reprocessed using standard off-line analysis software or maybe referred to an expert crystallographer.
The SMART X2S is also a superb teaching tool. Students can use the SMART X2S to acquire datasets and then process them using standard, manual integration and structure solution methods and they can compare their results to the automatically generated structures from the SMART X2S software.
- Step 3: SMART X2S displays the final refined structure in any of the standard model representations along with tools that allow you to rotate, translate and scale the structure.
The SMART X2S is a true benchtop system that can be placed anywhere in your laboratory. It is extremely compact, lightweight and completely air-cooled. It requires only AC power to operate, drawing ten times less power than a standard diffractometer.
The SMART X2S is also the first completely closed-beam system for X-ray structure determination. The sample is inserted through an external port and then loaded and aligned automatically, so that users never need to put their hands in the enclosure.
