RoHS by XRF

The European Union directive EU 2002/95/EC for the “Restriction of Hazardous Substances” (RoHS) limits the use of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in electrical and electronic products. Every affected product introduced to the EU market must be RoHS-compliant or it is banned. Manufacturers must ensure compliance by testing their products and continuously monitoring their production processes. Similar regulations have also been introduced in China, the US, and Australia.

A wide range of products is directly affected by RoHS. Regulated product categories are:

  • Household appliances
  • IT and telecommunications equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electrical and electronic tools
  • Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • Medical devices
  • Monitoring and control instruments
  • Automatic dispensers

Future legislations worldwide, like the EU directive EU 2002/96/EC “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (WEEE) and EU 2000/53/EC “End of Life Vehicle” (ELV), restrict the use of hazardous substances in order to decrease potential risks to health or the environment and to enforce recycling of old products. Manufacturers, customs and inspection laboratories need to analyse the regulated substances and cope with current and future demands, a challenging task considering the complex materials and analytical requirements involved.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62321 procedure defines X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) as the method of choice for screening of raw materials and components. The short analysis time of XRF provides the immediate results needed in the first steps of the manufacturing process. The direct analysis of solid samples and minimal sample preparation make XRF very cost-effective, ideal for the screening of a large number of samples.

Bruker AXS provides wavelength dispersive XRF as well as energy dispersive XRF solutions for RoHS screening.
