APEX II DUO - Dual Wavelength Perfected
The Most Versatile System for Small Molecule Crystallography
No question will be left unanswered with the most versatile system for small molecule crystallography available. The most sensitive detector combined with both Molybdenum and Copper sources on one goniometer allow you to collect charge density quality data with Mo radiation and exploit all the advantages of Cu wavelength for absolute structure determination and diffraction experiments on ever smaller organic crystals. Mixed wavelengths experiments can easily be set up in the Graphical User Interface and switching between wavelengths is fully automated without user intervention.
The APEX DUO combines a molybdenum sealed tube source and a low powered aircooled Copper MicroFocus tube with doubly curved crystal optics (DCC) on a versatile and highly accurate goniometer with the most sensitive CCD detector for crystallography.
With the newly designed Kappa goniometer, the graphite monochromated molybdenum fine focus tube delivers an intense stable spot with more than twice the intensity compared to collimated standard sealed tubes systems. The Copper MicroFocus source in combination with the focusing optics makes efficient use of 50 watts, generating an extremely high flux density. The 350 x 400 μm beam maintains optimal alignment, providing 50% more intensity than a standard sealed tube. The unique combination of a low powered MicroFocus source with a standard sealed tube source allows for simultaneous operation of both X-ray sources, typically one in operation and the other in standby mode. This allows for instantaneous switching of wavelengths and long tube lifetimes – no need for the strenuous cold starts required by other dual wavelength designs (which can significantly degrade the lifetime of your tubes). Intelligent software allows the user to set up combined experiments for successive data collections using both Cu and Mo wavelengths. The software will reconfigure the instrument on the fly from one wavelength to the other without any user intervention.
Detector
The APEX II CCD detector is based on a brand new model of the largest scientific-grade CCD chip manufactured - the Fairchild Imaging Systems 486 4K CCD (16 megapixels). This is the only CCD which does not require a taper to achieve the active area required in crystallography.
Goniometer
The APEX DUO is avaiable with two goniometers, the 4-circle KAPPA goniometer or the 3-circle fixed-chi goniometer. Both goniometers are highly accurate, precise and optimized for use with CCD area detectors. Reliable and proven collision avoidance software and hardware safeties make this an easy-to-use instrument. A high speed and high precision shutter mechanism is synchronized with the frame data collection for highly accurate and precise exposure times. The superior D8 design mounts the incident beam components - tube housing, X-ray optics, beam collimators - on a precision track. This ensures reproducible positioning making the exchange or addition of new optics very easy.
X-ray Sources
The APEX II DUO combines a sealed tube molybdenum and a Microfocus X-ray source - one in operation, the other in standby mode, for ultra fast switching, yet ensuring extended tube lifetime.
Software
The APEX II DUO comes with the APEX suite of crystallographic programs. The APEX software redifines user interaction with the crystallographic experiment. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) guides the user through the complete experiment with minimal user inputand maximum graphic feedback. The GUI lets the user focus on the structure determination at hand and does not require any knowledge of instrument geometry or data collection strategies. APEX is easy to use for the novice but has all the features required by expert crystallographers. APEX allows planning and execution of dual wavelength experiments in one session without futher user intervention. The software will automatically reconfigure itself, switching wavelengths, goniometer settings and collision avoidance maps within seconds.
