BRUNO
Solutions for automated crystal handling and screening
BRUNO is the complete crystal screening system featuring trouble-free crystal transfer and retrieval, automatic sample centering and integrated screening software. It combines state of the art robotics with our patented Kryo-vial mini Dewars to provide an ideal way to safely handle and characterize protein crystals.
Home labs as well as beamlines are looking to implement robotics as a means to optimize data collection efficiency. When combined with our Proteum solutions for data collection, BruNo not only simplifies high-throughput screening but also allows continuous data collection on selected samples without user intervention.
Features
- Table top storage dewar with a 48 sample rack
- Permeable door allows dewar lid to be closed during operation, less icing, less LN2 consumption
- Kryo-Vial mini dewar
- Automated Goniometer Head with slip ring mount
- Integrated control and screening software
Sample Handling
BruNo utilizes a compact, high-precision 6-axis handler to automatically mount and retrieve crystals. The tabletop dewar holds up to 48 samples which are maintained in cryo-storage by an auto-fill system. The dewar remains closed during operation to minimize ice formation and liquid nitrogen consumption.
Our unique Kryo-Vials simplify handling of frozen crystals. The Kryo-Vials contain an insert which traps liquid nitrogen to keep the sample at the proper temperature during transfer. This novel method allows the crystal to be mounted and retrieved at any goniometer angle.
Crystal Alignment
Samples are automatically aligned at the instrument center with our motorzied goniometer head (AGH). Not much bigger than a standard goniomter head, the AGH contains three micro-motors which adjust X, Y and Z motions under computer control. Each axis can move up to 5 mm allowing even bent loops to be easily centered. The versatile design also includes a slip ring mount for wire-free rotation.
PROTEUMplus Screening Software
As part of our PROTEUM suite, we have developed software methods to automate all aspects data collection. For crystal screening, samples can be scored and ranked based on several factors: unit cell refinement, mosaicity, diffraction limit and presence of ice rings. If data collection is the goal, users can configure PROTEUM to proceed with all samples that meet specific criteria or that are the best of a group. PROTEUM then determines the optimal collection strategy based on the diffraction limit for a given exposure time.
Features
- Easy experimental setup
- Variable screening parameters
- Sample indexing and scoring
- Auto strategy determination for data collection
- Manual control of sample loading/unloading
