4-circle Kappa goniometer - The Original – the Best

Goniometer Versatility

Bruker AXS, the inventors of the Kappa geometry, introduce the most accurate and flexible 4-axis goniostat ever.

The KAPPA is Bruker’s latest 4-circle goniometer which combines the gold-standard high precision D8 base with the most versatile Kappa stage available.

With a sphere of confusion of only 7 microns, the KAPPA’s mechanics are much more precise than those found in any other 3- or 4-circle goniometer design. This ensures that, as they rotate, even the tiniest microcrystals will remain at the instrument center and be fully bathed in small X-ray beams. The compact and short primary beam path ensures the highest flux from any X-ray source. The Kappa geometry allows for extremely high resolution work, e.g. charge density studies or data collection with Copper radiation.

The D8 base makes it easy to add new X-ray Optics and mount accessories like low temp devices directly on the base ring.

Software controlled goniometer axes Omega, Phi and Kappa offer full sample positioning freedom without obstruction between large cradles, detectors and sample conditioning devices. Automatic homing, extremely high slew and scan speeds, as well as full software support of all 4 axes distinguish this precision Kappa Goniometer from all others on the market.

The KAPPA also incorporates a software controlled detector track, for optimized detector-to-sample distances at a mouse click. This not only allows faster and more efficient data collection at short distances but also provides automatic withdrawal to prevent overlap with twinned crystals or supercell problems. The sample can be positioned to take photographs about any axis, for immediate verification of Laue group symmetry. The beam stop distance can be adjusted for collection of very low angle data and to minimize X-ray background.

Reliable and proven collision avoidance software and hardware safeties for detector, sample and collimator support make this an easy-to-use instrument. A high speed and high precision shutter mechanism is synchronized with the frame data collection for highly accurate and precise exposure times.

In the typical configuration the 4-circle KAPPA goniometer is equipped with the APEX II detector, the most sensitive detector available, but it can also be fitted with the large area APEX II-based PLATINUM 135 detector.
